Our work in Sanford began in 2006. Every Tuesday night we provided low-income families and those experiencing homelessness with basic necessities. We also helped our new friends get proper identification and prepare for job interviews. As we continued to see the effects of poverty on men, children, and single mothers, we realized that it would take more than a part-time role to transform lives in our community. We needed to invest more time to see real life change and transformation.
In 2014 we joined Cru Inner City as full-time missionary staff. We partnered with local churches and other city-minded organizations to bring hope, seek justice, and change our community. These experiences were the foundation for ACT to A.C.T. (A2A) to be created in 2017.
We believe poverty is rooted in broken relationships. For this reason, A2A uses a relational approach to address the root issues plaguing our community, not just the symptoms. A2A humbly walks side by side with individuals to guide them on how to overcome their particular situations. We help others move past their circumstances through housing, mentorship, & life skills while being in a relationship with the person in need.
In 2020, A2A shifted from an intervention model to a prevention model. A2A began working exclusively with Transition Aged Youth in our foster care system. Transitional Age Youth (TAY) are between the ages of eighteen to twenty-four who are in transition from state custody or foster care and are at risk of becoming homeless and trafficked. Approximately 30,000 youth are forced to exit the foster care system annually without having found a family placement or a support network. With this new focus, A2A began partnering with local organizations already providing care for emerging adults. A2A provides comes alongside these organizations and provides mentoring that includes life and social skills, career and educational coaching, and ongoing support.
